Keeping Students Safe in Cyberspace by Reyhane Alborz

In recent years, with the increasing use of technology in all aspects of life, especially in education,  cybersecurity is now a top K-12 IT priority. Providing a safe and secure space for children has become an important issue. Especially in the past year, the Covid-19 caused many classes to be held online. This has both positive and negative aspects. Since children are learning and making mistakes, the online world can be scary. However, it's important to understand the advantages of going digital. Finally, children should be able to take advantage of cyberspace. They can communicate with loved ones, develop new skills, and gain access to information. For this reason, adults have a duty to protect children from these dangers and to give them the necessary awareness about cyberspace.

If you are a teacher or a parent, or you are dealing with children for any reason, the best way to protect them is to know the dangers of any environment in which they live. And know that prevention is the key to safety. Children are growing up with access to social media and smart devices. Controlling their smart device might be difficult, but it's never too early to teach them about safety.

In this presentation, cyber citizenship according to ISTE standards is discussed. The ISTE Standards provide the competencies for learning, teaching, and leading in the digital age, providing a comprehensive roadmap for the effective use of technology in schools worldwide.

Just Like in the offline world, we all want our children to be safe, secure, happy, kind, and ethical online.
This presentation aims to raise awareness of the dangers in cyberspace for students, introduce the types of these available dangers, and explore ways to deal with them. Finally, an application that is useful for protecting children in this space is introduced.

Learning With Merge Cube (Game-based Learning) by Sweety Sweety

With the inclusion of technology in the classroom, learning should not be taken for granted. By being teachers, we all understand that at present there are more chances our students get distracted from their learning. They may indulge themselves in other activities like social media or games. So, our responsibility increases to innovate such strategies in the classroom that students learn while playing and do not lose interest.

The ISTE standard also signifies building a shared vision by collaboratively creating a strategic plan that articulates how technology will be used to enhance learning. Merge Cube enhances learning by including innovative ideas in the classroom.

This presentation is about how learning can be engaging and interesting by using modern tools and technology. It is not necessary that students have to read textbooks and write notes like traditional methods to learn something new. My audience will see how modern technology has transformed the classroom into a virtual gaming world using 3-D.

Digital Citizenship by Kamalpreet Kaur Kular

We live in the era of the 21st century, and it is known as the ‘Digital age.’ Due to technological advancements, schools are responsible for teaching students to be “Digital” as well as good citizens. On the other hand, a digital citizen must have a certain level of digital literacy, notwithstanding misunderstandings, notably in the sphere of education.

According to the ISTE standards, safe, legal, and ethical use of digital tools helps a lot in understanding the role of digital literacy. Overall, my presentation is designed to create awareness on using the internet and being a “Digital Citizen” or “Good citizen.”

My presentation gives an overview of digital citizenship. Following it, I throw light on digital footprints and how can we safely practice the activities of the internet. It is essential to have the proper knowledge of “Digital Access” to the internet. I corroborate my research from the personal experience that I encountered in the entire MS IT program.

Mentoring and Assisting Synchronous  & Asynchronous Learning by Geiza Bianchi de Lellis

During the fall term of 2020, my field activity was carried out when I assisted the professor of the Multimedia Authoring course as a Teaching Assistant. This course is part of the master's program in Instructional Technology at the New York Institute of Technology. Classes took place synchronously, in-person and online. Most students attended classes in person, while some attended online classes through Zoom.

This class model was implemented due to restrictions related to the Covid-19 pandemic, in which some students were unable to travel to Canada and had to start the course in their own country. My role consisted of assisting the professor and mentoring students during both face-to-face and online classes.

In addition to classes, I also helped students with their projects and after-class activities. Through digital learning management, Canvas, I implemented their learning, posting tutorial videos on the platform about Twinery and OBS software. I conducted tutorial videos using OBS, based on most students' doubts about their multimedia projects or core competencies required in some technology to complete their tasks. In addition, I also attended individually to students who requested assistance through meetings pre-scheduled by Zoom. During the course, I also helped the professor evaluating student activities and final projects through the Canvas platform, grading, and giving them feedback.

I will support my ideas with different researches and my own experience.

Safety Awareness while using Technology by Jignasha Vadi

Modern teaching-learning depends on the technology of networked computing more than ever. Whether it is the Internet or other less well-known networks, educators and students now depend on technology. As there is almost no limit to what can be done online,  the Internet makes it possible to access information quickly, communicate around the world, and much more.

Networked computing offers easy access, a significant degree of anonymity, and while this presents us with unique opportunities, it also presents us with unique dangers. Unfortunately, the Internet is also home to certain risks, such as malware, spam, and phishing. Considering the increasing use and even dependence on networked computing, it is pertinent to examine the social, physical, and ethical dangers. This presentation critically debates whether the teaching/learning world with the Internet is as dangerous as the physical world.

If students want to stay safe online, they will need to understand these risks and learn how to avoid them. As the developing mind can hardly recognize the risk, students should be instructed to deal with reality and be safe. Computers can often give students a false sense of security. However, to stay safe online, students need to take a more cautious approach with the teacher's guidance.

Teachers can train students about the safe approach. Students should not be afraid to use the Internet but remember that it comes with many of the sme risks from the real world.

Technology: Bridge the Gap by Qiran Chen

Under the impact of COVID-19, human society has been through significant changes, specifically the communication part, which serves humankind's basic needs. Educators have been trying hard to bring the students together, making the lesson engageable and creating an interactive learning environment.

As a student from the M.S.I.T. (Master's Degree in Instructional Technology) program, the presenter struggled greatly through different projects; moreover, the collaborative work becomes even more difficult. However, technology does an exceptional job in supporting learning and teaching. Nevertheless, technology helped me in my study and learning through my journey to the master’s degree. The major impact that technology brings to the presenter is not only how functional these tools are but also how does technology help shorten the distance between people, culture and even recognition from different perspectives.

In this presentation, I will share the learning experiences upon the impact of technology-supported individual/group work. In addition, the presentation reflects and wraps up the learning outcomes through the two years' study.

E-learning Modules In PowerPoint To Make Classrooms More Interactive by Kamal Singh

This is a technically advanced era. We can see technology everywhere. But not everyone know how we can use that technology according to the situation. I was also one of them. Before taking course of Multimedia Authoring, I did not know more about powerpoint.

Learning power point was not challenging, but how to use that in the classroom was challenging. While learning to use powerpoint in Multimedia Authoring, I memorized the days when I was in the school, and teachers faced difficulty in teaching students. I get to know the reason. Attention was the reason.

I created a E-module on pollution by using power point, by keeping all the things in mind to make classroom interactive. Power point covered everything.

In this presentation I will discuss,

  • How learning Instructional Technology impacted me?

  • How power point could be use as an interactive tool for teaching?

Increasing Student Engagement Through Interactive PowerPoint by Baljinder Kaur Sandhu

PowerPoint has become a source of presentation these days everywhere. But when we add the feature of interactivity to it, it becomes more powerful. An interactive presentation is one where you can interact with using navigation, hyperlinks, and hotspots, etc. So when you are presenting, you can click on some content and something will happen such as a popup box appearing or you can jump to a specific slide.

Interaction changes the way you can present and talk to students. It frees us from a linear presentation format, allowing us to jump to slides depending on the conversation and creating a personal experience for the students. This is key to an all-important ‘student-centric experience.

The ISTE Standards for Educators that are linked to this presentation are 2 E - Share lessons learned, best practices, challenges, and impact of learning with other education leaders who want to learn from this work. Standard 2 B - Build on shared vision by collaboratively creating a strategic plan that articulates how technology will be used to enhance learning.
